A contest

Well, since school and work and relative worries have destroyed my ability to get squat done around the house before May, I'm going to at least hold a contest.

The item you see above was once on an old house. It now sits on my desk and performs an important function.

So, what was it originally, and what do I use it for now?

The winner gets a choice of either shortbread cookies, or a grabbag of dollar-store tzotchkes. I'll announce the winner after a few days.

It looks to me like the very tip of a house. I don't know how to explain it, but I've seen old house that have something similar to that at the very top.

This is holding_on from live journal by the way.

It looks like the top of a weather vane or a lightning conductor. When you aren't chasing crackheads down the street waving it in your hand I suppose you might use it as a letter opener?

Gary, you got the lighting conductor correct - it was the tip of a lightning rod; Sherry, that's probably what you are visualizing as well.

But it's not being used to fend off crazed crackheads, nor to open letters. I'm running this contest simultaneously on my personal journal, so I'll also mention a guess there - I didn't decide to use it as a decorative finial on a fencepost or anything else.

So we've established the original purpose, now I need someone to guess what I use it for now to win.

You either use it as a letter opener or a trash spike (for picking trash paper off the floor)...

I'm thinking a finial...

Jennifer, looks like we cross posted: Nope, not a finial, and not being used as a letter opener or trash spike.

Oh my god, I was so going to say letter-opener. And I was so also going to say der. But now... um... I'll guess... Dog-defender?

By which I mean keeping the dogs off your desk. Not protecting them from no-see-um monsters.

Ooh, ooh, ooh! Amish sex toy! No, wait ..... Ice pick!

In Pennsyltucky it could be a screwdriver.

Hmmm, Are you still asking what you use it for now? I've just a few ideas, a rather threatening looking paper weight? or perhaps a wedge for the door, assuming the floor is tough and it has no harsh edges, not likely do you need to use it to to hold a window open. OOPS! Maybe this is not on your workplace desk? If it's home desk I remove the door wedge idea entry since wood floors would not get this abuse from you. As a side consideration I hope the base portion where the ground conductor was connected is not lead, need I say more? That's about enough of my 2 cents.

Uh, I was going to guess you were using it in the garden to make holes for seeds & bulbs. Or it's an Amish sex toy. Definitely one or the other.

But then I remembered you said it sits on your desk and performs an important task.

So I'm going to guess you use it to open up your computer shell every time it crashes.....because you own a Windows machine?

Oh my goodness, Gary--it is going to take me a long time to get thoughts of Amish sex toys out of my mind!
